For many half term can be a time of panic; with wondering how to entertain the kids, and how to keep the cost low – especially on the run up to christmas. This October we are fortunate that things are open again and events are happening all over the place, especially right here on our doorstep in East Yorkshire (and a litte bit beyond too).
So, without further ado, here are a few that I’ve picked out that will help you have a happening half term at a fraction of the cost. Most are East Yorskhire or at least Yorkshire based, and are things that will entertain across age groups. My kids range from 11 years down to 7 months and so it is vital that all get something from the activities and days out we emabrk on.
Half price flamingo land family pass
These are like gold dust and the chances are that by the time this has published, they may very well have sold out (again). If however you are fortunate enough to get in there quickly, then planet radio have a bundle of half price family passes for flamingo land. It is is easy accessible from East Yorkshire and is fun for all with various rides and a wonderful zoo. Deffinitley worth it for a memorable day out – especially when it’s half price.
Hull City FC open training session and signing
Footy fan or not, this sounds like a pretty exciting day out this half term. It is one my friend sent over in our school what’s app group (who else has one to keep on track?!), and one I think our kids would quite like, even just for the experience of visiting the KC stadium!
Basically, on Tuesday 26th October, all supporters are invited to attend – with tickets FREE of charge! The first team will be training on the MKM stadium pitch where you can watch, meet them afterwards for pics and autographs, and enjoy various little events/games going on around the stadium. All the details can be found HERE!
Art Gallery workshops
For the creative kids amongst us, then art gallery workshops offer an exciting and beneficial opportunity to learn and practice creative skills. Ferens art gallery in Hull have a fantastic event with artist Dom Heffer called “The Big Roar”. It is free (but you do need to book – HERE) and you will have the opportunity to help them create a giant jungle scene inspired Rosa Bonheur’s Lion at Home painting.
The booking link also has a bunch of other events on at art galleries across Yorkshire (scroll down the page and take a gander).
Lego Event at The National Railway Museum
The National Railway Museum in York has for a long time being one of our faves. Whether a tot or grandparent, it offers an exciting experience of trains and locomotives for all – and it’s FREE!
It is the ideal rainy day activitiy too to get out of the house, and this half term they have Inspiring family activities that are all LEGO and engineering based. These FREE hands-on activities will help the whole family learn more about engineering giants that changed the world. So why not pop along and build something together – details can be found HERE!
If you want to extend the day in York, and make it that little bit more fun for the kids, then over at Little Vikings they have an I spy trail of York that looks really fun and super interesting for the kiddos! It is one I definitely want to try out this half term, both as a lovely way to get out and about together and also to learn some new things about York along the way.
York is one of our favourite cities and these 2 activities alone will be sure to fill the entire day – for FREE!! We will likely top it off with seasonal hot chocolates somewhere as a half term treat!
Cheap Cinema Tickets
We love a good family trip to the cinema with a bag full of goodies from poundland (ssshhh)! And, with several cinemas now doing cheaper tickets on the weekends and school holidays, it also means it isn’t a super expensive activity anymore either. Check out Reel in Hull and Cineworld Cinemas and Vue who offer screenings for kids every Saturday and Sunday morning from 10am, plus every day in the school holidays for just £2.50.
Budget cinema – yes please!
2 for 1 on 150 attractions
If you are wanting to travel further afield this half term, or even one weekend soon, then with a family and friends railcard you can get into a bunch of attractions, theatres and foodie places on 2 for 1. Not to mention that you also receive a hearty discount on rail travel too.
We are currently toying with the idea of a day or 2 in London as a family and this is something we are looking into. We have had a family railcard for several years; it costs £30 for the year and gives you a third off adult rail fares for up to four adults and 60% off for up to four kids between five and 15. You then just download the 2 for 1 vouchers and present them with your railcard. It includes things like Legoland, the dungeons, sea life and the shard.
Half Price Family Ticket to Yorkshire Wildlife Park & Creepy Carnival
Yorkshire wildlife park is a fab day out to see some of natures finest creatures. They have lions, tigers, polar bears, red pandas, giraffes (to name a few) and also, for half term – a creepy carnival event! Via this deal on WOWCHER, you can get a family ticket for half price, which includes entry to the wildlife park and the creepy carnival event too. It works out at £38 which I think is flipping well good for the park itself, without the extras… and you get the extras too for some halloween excitement!
I love half term and cannot wait to get out together; walking, exploring, learning and generally doing things that are both fun and budget friendly too. I am excited to see family and make some memories this October here in Yorkshire (and hopefully a litte further afield too). We hope to do several of the above, possibly climb a mountain in the Yorkshire dales and probably visit a manor house or something too!
If you are still looking for more ideas then check out our 5 Free days out in East Yorkshire post and our budget friendly outdoor places to visit in Yorkshire Hope you have fun whatever you choose to do, and wherever you find yourselves this half term! I especially hope that it save you a few quid too and you can feel the satisfaction of having fun for less!
