Review | School of Rock

The theatres have once again opened up and I couldn’t be more excited! I literally skipped into Hull New Theatre last weekend (it’s been far too long) and we had a cracking night, rocking out with our eldest kid to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock – it was absolutely fantastic and riotous, nothing beats live music and theatre!

School of rock is based on the hilarious hit movie with the same name, and this new musical follows Dewey Finn – a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band – sensationally performed live by the production’s young actors every night with roof-raising energy! Their musical talents are superb and the whole show will have you laughing out loud and rocking out in your seat!

We loved seeing this much loved film come to life on the stage with a mix of familiar songs and plenty of great new ones too. School of rock is one of our family faves and so we were delighted to see that the story line is familiar and so very funny (like really funny – I cry with laughter every time – it is hilarious).

We loved all of the actors – especially the kids and Dewey – and thought they were brilliant and made it such an amazing show! The set was great and yes, the kids all play their instruments live!

Our son Ethan (almost 11) said “I knew it would be good, but I didn’t know it would be THAT good! The music was amazing and I think its my best theatre show ever!” He is pretty musical himself and it was great for him to see kids a similar age to him being so confident and talented playing such amazing pieces and sticking it to the man!

We all loved it and it was a great welcome back to the theatres – funny, brilliant and amazing rocking music! I loved how inspiring it was for kids to be themselves; break the mould, embrace their talents and stick it to the man! If you have the opportunity to catch School of Rock on it’s UK tour, then absolutely go for it – literally the best night we have had in ages!

Also if you are local to the Hull theatres, then check out their upcoming shows – it is so wonderful to be back in them and watching live theatre again and the staff were so welcoming and helpful as always!

*Tickets were complimentary in return for an honest review!

We live over the river in Scunthorpe and I only discovered that Hull has such a great theatre a little while ago.
This sounds like a fantastic show, one that my family would love. x
