Review | Canal Toys Creative Kits – DIY Slime & Bath Bombs

At this time of year I like to tune into potential ideas of things that provide opportunities for the kids to make and create together. Christmas is on the horizon and crafty type gifts for any of our kids offer a creative outlet and time for them to make things together; giving them a sense of accomplishment, teamwork and excitement. They are both creative kids and quite into Science too, so anything that uses a combo of these skills gets bonus points here in the Smith Household!

Recently Canal Toys sent us a slime making kit and bath bomb making kit to try. The whole idea of both of these, in theory, were everything we would be looking for in a creative gift for our 9 year old and 7 year old. They are both creative, different, sciencey and also produce something that both the kids love – slime pots and bath bombs. We were excited to try them out and get to grips with learning how to make these much loved childhood favourites from scratch.

So Bomb DIY Factory – SRP £19.99

The So Bomb DIY factory offers you the opportunity to create six large delightfully fizzy bath bombs. You can design your own bath bomb in three easy steps; mixing the ingredients, pouring in chosen coloured powder, confetti and cute surprise, and then place in the mould and let it set.

Sounds simple right? Wrong! To say this is aimed at 6+ was ambitious, as we struggled with both Nathan and I helping both the kids!

The first thing I noticed about this kit that put me off was all the plastic and how flimsy it felt. It made me wonder where you would store it, and what would happen when the child gets bored of making a few bath bombs. The hardest part of it was that the instructions weren’t clear in British and it proved so difficult to get going.

It was such a shame, because the idea is that you add the scented and colourful bicarbonate of soda with water… mix, add citric acid and compress with surprises into a ball/Bath bomb shape seems so simple and exciting for kids to do!

What We Liked

We loved that the mixes smelt so nice – really fragrant and good smells you would want from a bath bomb!

We also loved the whole concept – the science behind it and the idea of making your own bath bombs for their baths or to give as gifts! The kids felt like they were doing experiments and it was educational and team building between them.

What We Didn’t Like

The large amount of plastic and flimsiness of the mixer, as well as the lack of instructions/very vague instructions (the combo was stressful!). With this in mind, I would question the age range as it states 6+ but even as adults we found it complicated and difficult to follow. We binned the first attempt as it didn’t work and unfortunately we struggled to make useable ones that followed too. But you never know, you might have more success!

The So Bomb DIY Factory includes:

  • 1 x Bath Bomb Factory
  • 1 x Mould Shape
  • 6 x Bicarbonate Sodium Bags
  • 6 x So Bomb Powder Bags
  • 2 x Decoration bags
  • 2 x Storage
  • 1 x Pipette
  • 4 x Cute surprise figures
  • 1 Instruction sheet

So Slime Shaker Kit – £9.99

Megan has wanted to make her own slime for such a long time, and so we were excited to experiment with the So slime DIY Shaker kit – which offers you everything you need to make 3 tubs of funky slime!

The slime maker was so much easier to navigate and a lot of fun too! It is virtually no mess slime making and is very simple. Each quirky pot has everything you need inside of it, and you take off the lid, add the So Slime powder & water up to the line – shake and let sit for a few minutes! Before you know it, you have 3 fabulous pots of fun slime, that, if you choose, you can also customise with beads and added extras!

THE KIDS LOVED IT!

What We Liked

We liked everything about this kit! It was easy for the kids to do and lots of fun during and after (because you have 3 awesome pots of slime!). The slime is a great “putty” like consistency and it smells really really nice.

I love the creativity of the pots it comes in (a milk carton, hot choc mug and gumball machine!) not only are they great to store the slime in, but also spark imaginative play too. Each one is appropriately fragranced (hot chocolate smells of chocolate!) and it generally is just super cute and fun to make and play with.

What We Didn’t Like

Not much to be honest it was fab and would make a really lovely gift that would be great for a boy or girl for a birthday or Christmas.

The So Slime DIY shaker kit contains:

  • Includes all you need to make the perfect slime!
  • 3 slime shakers to create
  • Added extras for the slime
  • Suitable for age 6+

These sets are a bit hit and miss. We’ve had the bath bomb set before and some worked some didn’t but we still had fun. My youngest has these sets on her Christmas list. Eek x
