This week has seen a major milestone in our 1st born’s life – he can ride his bike without stabilisers and we couldn’t be prouder!
For a couple of months he has gone on and on (and on some more) about wanting a bike. “The bike wouldn’t have stabilisers” he said because he “is a big boy”! And so after filling a sticker chart, and granddad having a hand-me-down from one of his scouts he earn’t himself a lovely little bike which he gets on at every opportunity and beams as he potters and wobbles around on it. Then on Sunday Nath took him to the park after church to really get stuck in and within only 10/15 mins he had it, he confidently rode round and round the band stand like a natural!
It doesn’t seem right to call this “An ordinary moment” because its such a special thing, but really it is ordinary, it is something all kids will do…a huge milestone that is so exciting and something that will enhance childhood I am sure…it is the start of summer adventures, Christmases with Santa bringing new shiny bikes and an ordinary part of his life that will be remembered for ever more .
I remember where I was when I 1st learn’t to ride a bike (and I know I was older than him), I remember the summer holidays of biking to the woods and building dens with my sisters, racing to the end of the street, shopping for mum and hanging the bags on the handle bars and then going all over on family bike rides…its such a vital skill for kids and I am happy he has cracked it so young. I see his cute little face beaming each time he gets on his bike and peddles like mad, when I see him wobbling around at the park and hear the stories of where Daddy has taken him to practice. I wonder if he will be hitting the skate park any time soon or racing friends around the street?
Either way I am so pleased that at 4.5 yrs old he is riding without stabilisers, that he had a goal and did all in his little power to accomplish it. He was determined and he conquered. This Ordinary milestone has been a proud mummy and daddy moment. Well done little E, riding a bike will create much fun and many adventures for you in life!
